Sliced

Class of: 2025

Major: Communication Design BFA

Medium: Collage (Cardstock Paper on Illustration Board)

Faculty: Diana Shpungin

Prompt: Focusing on the elements of design, effective composition and gestalt principles, students create a detailed cut paper collage using iconic/chosen objects as a vehicle for abstraction.

For this project, I had to make an abstract composition using “knife” as my keyword/object. I chose to approach the assignment and my object from a comparative lens through combining the shapes and details of a modern butter knife with those of a historical Javanese knife from The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s collection. The seams throughout have been intentionally placed at different angles to resemble the “slicing” of a knife.
