Waste Inventory
Class of: 2024
Major: Strategic Design and Management BBA
Medium: Combination of multiple media
Faculty: Christopher Kennedy
Prompt: For this project, I was tasked to create an inventory of “waste” by tracking all the trash and waste generated in a week. From that, I had to create a series of drawings and photographs in response to 2 all of the waste that we collected. I then chose one item and developed a systems map to represent the source materials involved in making the item, the manufacturing/transportation process, and environmental/social impacts.
For this project, I created a “waste inventory” by collecting all trash and garbage I generated within the timeframe of a week. From that, I decided to create a series of illustrations and photographs based on what I was able to collect throughout the course of the project. Subsequently, I chose to create a systems map surrounding an individual sock as my object. I wanted to include even the smallest details so the piece could draw attention to the number of systems and various processes that are often forgotten or overlooked in the process of manufacturing the sock. Through the project, I became more aware of the various subsystems that are involved in manufacturing, especially when it comes to clothing materials. Creating the systems map allowed me to realize that often, the work that goes into manufacturing and producing an item is often taken for granted or not considered at all. I hope that through my work, I can raise awareness about the importance of acknowledging the traceability of the processes that are involved in manufacturing products, and whether or not these processes are sustainable and worth the subsequent environmental impact.
