Prompt: For this assignment, we were to create an interactive space for Union Square Park to welcome visitors and residents back to the city after social distancing ends.
For my project, I was inspired by a bridge in my hometown where it a major part of its pedestrian span is underground, which is currently being reclaimed by nature as it is slowly submerged underwater. I find comfort in the cool, dark and devoid space, which made me want to mimic that experience in New York, where I seldom find comfort. I created a stairwell that references subway entrances that leads to an empty and pitch black space underground, which I would hope would, much like the bridge, slowly be taken back by the nature it disturbed.
