Containers in clay

Class of: 2024

Major: Fine Arts BFA

Medium: Water-based clay

Faculty: Hilda Shen

Prompt: For this project, we were asked to create a series of containers that hold captive space using the material clay.

While examining the different kinds of containers, I was particularly attracted to the animal styled vessels that originated in ancient Asia. Inspired by the diverse embodiment and integration of animals and vessels, I based this project on creating containers in clay around this theme. As shown in the pieces I’ve created, I tried to combine the two qualities through different methods. On one hand, I attached the forms of animals directly to the vessels with the dragon and the peacock containers. Contrarily for the pigeon and the ox, I decided to directly integrate the bodies of the animals into the vessels.
