Half Expected

Class of: 2028

Major: Communication Design BFA

Medium: Pigma Micron Pen on Print

Faculty: Diana Shpungin

Prompt: Utilize mark-making techniques and create an invented past and present landscape in two parts: digitally rendered in Adobe Illustrator and hand drawn in ink. The goal of the assignment was for each side to mimic the other, as digital and manual clash together in the modern age.

When you open the tin can of Danish butter cookies in your home, what’s inside? For some, it’s beautifully crafted mass-produced cookies. For others, it’s recycled buttons and old sewing supplies. “Half Expected,” explores an unexpected future: the disappearance of humans and a full society takeover by cockroaches and insects.

My piece uses exclamation points and a tweaked version of the ichthys symbol for the “present day” representation of our society, along with question marks for the uncertain future. The present is solidified by the digital side of my piece, while the future prone to change is drawn using ink. What’s on the inside of the cookie tin?
