Illegible

Class of: 2028

Major: Communication Design BFA

Medium: Digital 3D Sculpture by Hand Tracking

Faculty: Six Lauture

Prompt: Objective: This project challenges you to transform a static object, image, or environment into an interactive, time-based experience using physical computing. You will begin by selecting or creating a noninteractive piece—something that is static, still, and fixed in time. Through a series of hands-on exercises and prototypes, you’ll develop this work into a dynamic installation that responds to input and changes over time.

“Illegible,” represents a digital record of time between a static and dynamic set of systems. On one hand, the static system stands as a newspaper model that I made at the beginning of the semester. Wood mounted on steel to resemble a New York Times article. On the other hand, the dynamic system stands as a 3D sculpture that changes heights in values of representative bars based on the user’s hand position over the static piece. Together, the digital model changes with time, while the static model only stays the same.
