Prompt: How do we chart a path through the world? Where do our impulses come from? What forces impact our decisions? Where can we find guidance when the whole world seems to be upside down? What’s next? Does chance factor into the equation? Is it a game? Let’s make it one! - Each card must have some handmade element: hand coloring, drawing, stenciling, painting, collage - They can be 100% handmade if you prefer - They must all be the same shape but they do not have to be rectangles - The backs of the cards must all be the same (like in a deck of playing cards)
Given a word bank consisting of 52 words that we came up with in class, our objective was to create a deck of cards. A deck that merges tarot and playing cards. As for my deck, I chose to use collage as my medium. Materials I used for the illustrations include: five New Yorker magazines, used art books, and vintage 80s/90s books with illustrations. The books were sourced from the Strand and Alabaster Bookshop. For the backing, I used vellum paper with a stenciled design. After completing the deck, I came up with my own set of rules for the deck. Each card has two corresponding questions you can ask to guide yourself to whatever answer you were hoping to find in consulting this deck. The instructions for play are all listed in the manual.
