Prompt: Students were each assigned a movie genre, then asked to create a still out of unconventional materials. The still could be from a specific movie from the genre, a parody of the genre, or an application of what that genre stands for.

The genre I was assigned was action, so I knew I wanted to comment on the copious amounts of gore and violence within action movies. Action movies tend to glamorize violence and fill the screen with unnecessary bloodshed for shock value. I wanted to communicate this fetishization of violence, so I used undergarments and lace as the surface. The “fetishization” of violence is then ruined with the “bloodshed” often featured in these films. Using food coloring and a gel medium, I created the still with this fake blood. As for the choice of subject, I wanted to comment on the overall genre, so I chose an iconic still from an iconic movie: Kill Bill. The piece shows another aspect of the movie as well, showing how the main character pieces themselves together through a journey of violence and revenge. The piece is then signed with “Bill”, an homage to the final bloodshed needed to piece the main character together.
