Portrait of Dora Maar

Class of: 2028

Major: Communication Design BFA

Medium: Photoshop collage

Faculty: Sonya Sklaroff

Prompt: This project involves selecting a master portrait painting created before 1980 and reimagining it through a digital collage, incorporating a personal visual theme like nature, architecture, or objects. Using Photoshop, I blended my own photographs, drawings, AI-generated elements, or found images to create a new, experimental composition that merges the original portrait (in this case, Picasso's Portrait of Dora Maar) with my chosen theme.

For this project, I recreated Picasso’s Portrait of Dora Maar using a digital collage of fruits and vegetables. I chose this theme because the bright colors and textures of produce matched the bold style of the original painting. Using Photoshop, I carefully arranged images of fruits and vegetables to form the portrait.

The face is made of pineapple, with cherries and a strawberry for the eyes and lips, and green leaves for the hair. The body includes dragon fruit, grapes, blackberries, and carrots, while eggplants and a watermelon create the lower part. The background is filled with squash to tie everything together. This 2 design combines the fragmented shapes of Cubism with the natural beauty of fruits and vegetables, creating a fun and colorful reinterpretation of the original artwork.
