For my Bridge 4 project, I created a Short experimental film titled A Unsent Voice Message to My Mom. This short film was inspired by the temptations of being a college student in New York and wanting to feel the freedom of going out and exploring nightlife, but being held back by responsibility, fear of disappointing your parents, and the consequences if you did go out against your parents’ wishes. This film was shot and edited to try and best reflect my sight and experience going out and watching my friends as they dance so freely. College is a sandbox of life, especially your first year, where you are legally an adult but not in actuality, as you still feel like a kid and your parent still see you as one. This leads to cognitive dissonance as you want to go be an adult, yet you understand there are limitations to what you can explore and experience. My mom is very strict and hates the idea of me being anywhere besides classes or my dorm. This leads to even when I’m at a park or walking to the grocery store, she starts to freak out when she sees my location isn’t at school or my dorm. I wish I could speak freely to her and confide in my mom, but I understand that isn’t and will never be our relationship. Yet I can’t help but envy others who did have that relationship with their moms.
