Evolve

Class of: 2023

Major: Fashion Design BFA

Medium: Mixed Media

Faculty: Gyun Hur

Prompt: To make a wearable on the basis of topics that had been researched and explored in the class previously.

For my final project for Integrative Studio 2: Fashion, I chose to explore the concept of sizes in the fashion industry. It is no secret that the popular media and several fashion brands propagate the idea of skinny being better. In light of this, I researched and learned more about the saree, which is a traditional outfit worn in the Indian culture. The spree does not have any size. It is simply 9 yards of beautiful fabric that can be draped in several ways around the body and makes for a beautiful outfit. I made a sample saree using muslin and creating the borders with type. The text says ‘evolve’ in the Devanagari script, which is my subtle plea to the fashion industry to well, evolve. I experimented with three different kinds of drapes – on a mannequin with illustrations of different women – further propagating the concept of inclusivity in women, irrespective of how they look.
