The Deck of Questions - Mind Games

Class of: 2024

Major: Fine Arts BFA

Medium: Playing cards, oil paint

Faculty: Matthew Jensen

Prompt: For this assignment, we created 4-word categories based on a parental figure, a global issue, ourselves, and a possible career path. We then wrote 8 connected words per category, and an additional 4 words for "wild cards". Once all our words were chosen (without any knowledge of the assignment prompt), we had to create a deck of 52 cards with each card depicting one of our words.

I decided to portray each of my chosen words through small, painted illustrations. I created 4 different border outlines that denoted each word category, or “suit”. I wanted my deck to be a congruous body of work, but at the same time ensure that all 52 pieces spoke for themselves and had an individual character. While some of the cards were painted as a literal depiction of a given word, I decided that others would have a more personal meaning. For many of my more sentimental words, I painted images that I associated with a certain emotion or memory, which personalized my deck and deepened my connection with many of them. Because each card is representative of an idea that is important and specific to my life and my interests, I consider the entire work to be a deck of š˜®š˜¦.
