Prompt: For the Sacred Body Space Project, we were prompted to show a part of our body we see as sacred—something we protect, respect, or find personal meaning in.

For the Sacred Body Space Project, we were asked to highlight a part of the body we see as sacred—
something we protect, respect, or hold personal meaning in. I chose the spine because it’s essential to our body’s support system. As someone who did competitive gymnastics, I’ve seen how fragile the spine can be and how much we rely on it.

“The Spine” is a hand crocheted sculpture made from thread over the span of 32+ hours. I chose this
delicate material to reflect both the vulnerability and strength of the spine. The thread also represents the collagen within it, which gives it flexibility and structure.

My intention was to bring attention to a part of the body that is always working for us but is often
overlooked. The time, material, and process were all chosen to emphasize its sacredness physically and emotionally, based on my own experiences with it.
