Artemis
Prompt: Mass is distinguished from volume in that it has weight and solidity. Design a form to be cast in plaster which, although relatively small in size, conveys the monumental qualities of a large massive structure and the surface of which addresses a cultural subject. Develop this form through research, sketching and plan/oblique drawings. Create a mold using foam core and other materials, and cast it in plaster. Design and cast a small plaster sculpture that touches on a relevant cultural topic. This can be expressed either abstractly or literally in the form or surface of the piece. As well, utilize the idea of containment in this piece by creating a mold that allows you to cast an object in place.
Artemis is a plaster sculpture painted with a blue wash with red plexiglass rods casted in place. I decided to name it after the recent space exploration because it reminded me of a spaceship with the angular form and the cool color with bright red streaks. It was painted blue to make sure the red plexiglass stands out while still giving a pop of color. Because we used plaster, we had to think of the design in opposite space by thinking of the negative space. The foam mold was difficult to make but the final outcome was exactly how I imagined it.
