Prompt: Focusing on the elements of design, effective composition and gestalt principles, students create a detailed cut paper collage using iconic objects as a vehicle for abstraction.
‘Sharp cuts, straight edges’ is an abstraction of the iconic object – scissors that we use on a daily basis, and even more as art students. To create an interesting composition, I used digital tools like Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop to build an illusion of overlapping scissors in different angles, shapes and sizes. I transferred the digital renderings to paper, using cut pieces of black paper to make the mirage of abstracted scissors. Using geometrical shapes with sharp cuts and straight edges, I filled the whole composition up, to complement the purpose and function of a scissor. As a scissor provides with sharp cuts, I decided to create scissors using sharply cut shapes.
