Prompt: The idea was to create a Collapsible Modular Set-collection for a Public Seating area for a specific community (each group will decide on the community of choice). The collection will have characteristics representing the community you selected by using forms, colors, materials, function, how it interacts with the human body, etc. You will use a verity of materials, structures, and connection techniques based on what you have learned from the mini assignments and previous projects.
I tried designing a collection of chairs for the average New York City apartment dweller. This chair is mainly geared towards college students’ tiny dorm rooms, or really anyone living in small spaces. This chair set is perfect for the limited space we know you have. It can be tucked away under your bed or desk, or instead of storing it, use it. I decided to use the interlocking method for the project as I found it the most apt for the project, thus its collapsible and can be easily transported from one place to the other with the help of a rope or a string. After finishing the first part of the project I realised that the chair was extremely unstable which further let me add an additional design element i.e. the elongated wood panels between the legs that help the chair to be stable. My main idea was to create something minimalistic but also something which is pleasing to look at, Thus I sanded the edges and made it much more curvy which made the piece look much more finished and professional.
