Narcissism
Prompt: For our final project, we were assigned to create a series of 3–5 panels, each standalone yet contributing to a cohesive whole. Using a given word as inspiration, we could explore narrative or abstract approaches, letting its meaning guide our work. Any media from the semester was allowed, with the option to combine techniques or work digitally. The project emphasized mood, composition, and transitions to unify the series.
For this project, I researched the works of the iconic graphic designer and illustrator Tadanori Yokoo, whose vibrant and surreal imagery has significantly influenced modern art and design. His bold use of color, intricate layering, and symbolic elements provided the foundation for my exploration. I analyzed his recurring themes, visual motifs, and storytelling techniques, then reinterpreted these within the context of ‘narcissism,’ adapting them to fit my vision. The color palettes and object-snipping techniques were carefully selected to align with my aesthetic and pay homage to my first semester’s work. This approach allowed the pieces to reflect the influence of Yokoo and my creative identity, creating a cohesive blend of inspiration and self-expression.
