Tonight’s First Year student workshop is: Intro to Woodworking | A Simple Wooden Box!
In this workshop with Parsons faculty member Abe McNally, students will learn to measure, cut, and assemble material to build a simple wooden box. Attendees will get comfortable using the bandsaw, drill press, belt sander, drill gun, and combination square in the Making Center’s N2 shop. All participants must have completed the Making Center General Orientation, and the N2 General Shop // Tier 1 Wood Orientation (must be taken subsequent to General Orientation).
By the end of this workshop, you will be able to understand the basic types and properties of wood, accurately measure and mark wood using various measuring tools, make cross and rip cuts with the bandsaw and use proper guides and miter jigs, use both the belt sander and hand sander to finish wood cuts, use the drill press and hand drill to pre-drill, countersink, and drive screws, and properly clamp wood. Bring a mechanical pencil and a sketchbook, and please wear appropriate wood shop attire: Close-toed shoes/no heels, hair pulled back, no dangly or loose clothes.
