Prompt: This assignment asks students to create a split drawing that represents an invented past and present landscape (or portrait) using unique mark-making techniques. One half is hand-drawn in ink, and the other is digitally rendered in Illustrator, with each side designed to mimic the other in style and technique.
For this project, I chose to highlight my great-grandparents’ cottage in Poland. The digital half of the drawing was created by referencing a photograph of the home and incorporates line work and symbols tied to Polish culture. In contrast, the hand-drawn half was completed from memory using Micron pens, reflecting how I, along with my mother and grandparents, recall the home in fragments. This side emphasizes the imperfections, cracks, and partial details that often come with memory, reinforcing the contrast between digital precision and the human, emotional nature of recollection.
