Major: Communication Design BFA

Medium: Digital collage

Faculty: Ginger Levant

Prompt: The assignment was to create a 2D artwork that combined the usage of a grid, Gestalt principles, and influences from two similar artists.

My artists of choice were Hannah Hoch and Raul Hausmann- both contemporaries during the Dada movement that developed as response to WW1 and the rigid capitalistic society that had developed at the time. Hoch and Hausmann both used collage and photomontage as a medium to embody the nonsensical, playful nature of Dada, creating strange images, often using human figures, isolated human anatomy, and random imagery, as well as typography.

I wanted to play with all these elements, paying homage to these artists, while at the same time, using a digital format to give myself the flexibility to experiment and distinguish my work from theirs in some way. My aim was to use found imagery- sourced from both the internet and physical media- to work in my chosen artists’ tradition and embody traits of Dada.
