We Live On This Planet

Class of: 2024

Major: Fashion Design BFA

Medium: Block Printing Ink, Cardboard, White Fabric , Bristol Paper

Faculty: Andrea Katz

Prompt: The prompt of this project was "The Medium is the Message". After being assigned a partner, the project involved agreeing upon a social condition that each partner is concerned with. Each partner will guide the making of their craftivism project using a craft medium of the other partner. The goal of this prompt was to collaborate and teach your partner the craft you specialize in.

During this project, I took the challenge of making a piece with my classmates craft: block printing. By using block printing on Bristol paper, cardboard, and fabric; I hope to bring attention to littering and pollution of our oceans. Inspired by Terri Swearigen, I took the quote: “We are living on this planet as if we had another to go to” and repeatedly printing it. By doing so, I hope it captivates the audiences eyes to see the importance of the subject. Adding on, I hope it makes them think of their actions. By installing the turtles made from fabric; it serves as a reminder of the beautiful organisms that we are losing and hurting by littering.Since it was my very  rst time doing block printing I learned to carve neatly and with control.

One of the things that made this project interesting was that me and my partner had to teach other through zoom/ face-time calls. Overall, I’m very happy to have worked with this medium because I found it very interesting and fun to work with. I look forward to working with block printing on fabric and other surfaces.
