This piece was made for a self-portrait assignment to be done in 8.5 x 11 inch dimensions, interpreted through tapestry crochet. I’ve been crocheting since ninth grade, so this medium feels familiar to me. But for this project, I wanted to push that familiarity into something more complex. Instead of crocheting intuitively like I do with garments or small figures, I worked with a 40 × 60 grid that forced me to stay present. Every stitch required planning, from when to switch colors to how to prepare the previous loop for a color change.

The color palette centers on pink to acknowledge breast cancer awareness. I made this piece during October, and I was thinking of those who have survived, those still fighting, and those who have passed. The pink ribbon reveals itself through the composition: it begins at the bottom left, traces along the jaw, wraps around the ear, and loops over the head before closing at the right shoulder. As the ribbon moves through the portrait, it carries a sense of care for the living, remembrance for the lost, and strength for those still fighting.

Crochet has become a part of my artistic identity. It’s where my hand and time are most visible. Using it for a self-portrait seemed right because it’s what I know best, but also because it challenges how portraiture can be built. Studying Gestalt principles while making this piece helped me think about perception and how small parts form an image, and how our minds naturally seek order and unity even in complexity. That relationship between craft, structure, and understanding is what I want to keep exploring as I grow as both an artist and designer.
