Space-In-Betweeen

Class of: 2027

Major: Fashion Design BFA

Medium: Wearable Sculpture of Reeds

Faculty: Madeline Schwartzman

Prompt: Uni Square Art has decided to distinguish itself with a slightly different and bolder mission. Instead of temporary sculpture installations, they are commissioning artists, designers and architects to propose long term spatial interventions that connect the park level to the subway station below. Through a series of shifts in the landscape, orientation, use of materials, and level changes, they are interested in drawing attention to the flora and fauna of the site, and promoting the optimistic notion of change. This is also an attempt to educate people about the local environment. The commission would like the artists themselves, to develop the program and the design.

Sofia Isabel Kavlin bodied her shoot into the definition of space-in-between…

Can I use this body to decorate, The spaces between?

To undergo a process of un-naming — Un-learning the meaning of words,

To see what they might be saying.

I inhabit spaciousness to realize, The unscripted potential of my being.

My softest parts need that, Space beneath the sun, The warmth of it,

The pleasure of solitude, To make themselves, known to me.

I recognize myself between minutes, Only in lingering moments,

The daze of what some call “time wasted,” I call “time emerging

through me.”

I circle around the names I’ve been given, To expand the boundaries of myself,

Into unknown territory, In an effort to see myself more clearly,

In the hollows of decorated void.
