It’s All In Your Head

Class of: 2028

Major: Communication Design BFA

Medium: Needle Felting

Faculty: Carol Peligian

Prompt: We were asked to use any material to create a sculpture of a head. We could use someone personal or a heroic figure as a starting point.

Growing up, my brother and I were both in combats sports. While many people think of combat sports as a violent thing, learning it actually requires a lot of play. I wanted to showcase this playful sibling dynamic we have through this piece. This is my brother’s head and an homage to him. His face and head is dented from a punch. The head is made entirely with felt. I chose this material because I wanted it to be a soft piece but with a firm structure. This way, the face looks soft enough for a punch to dent it, but the material is solid enough so that the dent would hold in place. I was able to manipulate the felt to create an accurate face with detailed stretches and lines leading into the dent made by the punch.
