Nature’s Rags: Naturally Dyed Durags

Class of: 2024

Major: Fashion Design BFA

Medium: Slide show

Faculty: Jamie Kruse

Prompt: The prompt for this project was to use skills and interests related to my major to create a practice that you can enact on a regular basis, or an object/design that you can create, use and take care of and/or continuously adapt — for the next 10 years.

This piece  t the given assignment because I made something that is a long life design that I can continue to make for the next ten years. My creative intention was to create a line of durags that were made with all natural pigments to reduce the amount of harm produced during the dying process. I chose to use durags because they are known for their long life design and their cultural relevance and I wanted to make something that I use on a daily basis. After learning about all of the harmful effects that come with the dying process in my sustainable systems class I really wanted to reduce the impact and create something that would be manageable, cost effective, and beautiful.
