Magic Pencils
Class of: 2024
Major: Illustration BFA
Medium: Black card-stock paper on a white illustration board
Faculty: Diana Shpungin
Prompt: Focusing on the elements of design, effective composition and gestalt principles, students create a detailed cut paper collage using iconic objects as a vehicle for abstraction.
The design highlights the optical illusion by both silhouette and solid body of different kinds of pencils, my chosen object for the assignment. On the background, the diamond pattern is perhaps the silhouettes of multiple pencils overlapping each other, and on top, there are diverse designs of the pencils. I try to balance out the negative space and positive space by having consistency in pattern while adding offbeat styles of pencils to emphasize on the illusion as well as details.
