Going into this project, I was wary of the fact that this photo collage had to address the issue of identity as well as our own individual cultures. I have always disliked the concept of choosing parts of my identity and conveying it through a piece of art because I still am unsure of who I am and if I even fit into any cultural category. In past works, I would use Chinese symbols and iconography that tackle identity since both my parents are Chinese immigrants. However, I’ve never been comfortable using my heritage as a large part of my identity. This collage touches on that personal issue as well as the aspects of how me being of Chinese descent personally affects me.
