The Great Emu War Monument

Class of: 2023

Major: Product Design BFA

Medium: Sculpture, a combination of multiple media

Faculty: Christian Nguyen

Prompt: The project prompt was to research a historic, person, place, or thing and to propose a public monument or memorial to it.

I propose to build a Memorial in the center of the roundabout where Constitution Ave, Northcott Dr, and Sellheim Ave converge. I would erect a statue of an emu comprised of 10,000 bullets which is about how many bullets were fired during the war. This emu would stand facing the Russel offices for all passers-by to see. The intention of the sculpture is to mainly spark interest in anybody who sees it and teach them about The Great Emu War of 1932 while comedically displaying the emu taunting the Australian department of defense. This was made during quarantine and limited materials were available. The emu itself is constructed of Perler beads.
