The Invented Space

Class of: 2024

Major: Fine Arts BFA

Medium: Digital art

Faculty: Karelyn Siegler

Prompt: The assignment was to create an invented space using the skills and principles we had learned over the course, e.g. the primary shapes and solids, the figure, perspective, etc.

For our ‘Invented Space’ assignment, I decided to create an environment out of the primary shapes and solids we had learned throughout our course. As I admire natural landscapes such as forests and mountain ranges, I decided to use them as an inspiration. My invented space is the edge of an ‘alternative forest’ with big, abstracted trees towering above a cliff edge with a single figure atop it. The figure is present to add a sense of scale and suggest that the environment is larger than life. I also wanted to recreate the feeling we get sometimes in a forest, or any vast landscape, that we are very small in comparison to power of the natural world. This is also tied to one of my artist inspirations, Tomás Sánchez, whose figures are always minuscule within his detailed landscape paintings.
