Prompt: The assignment was to create a triptych that tells a story and coneys the passage of time. The goal of which was to tell story with a series of three panels are designed to be seen at the same time. Each panel should have contained a different event that had some relation to another.
My idea for this project was to follow the life of a plastic bag as it finds it’s way into nature. This piece uses a combination of color, shape, and texture in composition with Gestalt principles to convey the passage of time. The shape and use of color are tools used to help guide the viewers eye in a direction that supports the concept of time displayed in the piece. I intended to create abstract panel shapes to focus the viewer to the subject of each panel as they move through the piece. The introduction of color creates a sense of continuity that supports the movement of the piece. The first image simply shows a plastic bag in use. The second image shows a bird eating that bag. While the last image depicts the detrimental consequences of the piece of plastic. I wanted the presence of color to decrease as the eye went down the piece. My intention was to depict each of these events in a chronological order, following the same bird over a course of time. However, in the real world, each of these events can happen simultaneously , with a different piece of trash, a different bird. I choose a bird because it is a common
victim of plastic pollution.
