The Growth

Class of: 2027

Major: Product Design BFA

Medium: Sculpture

Faculty: Carol Peligian

Prompt: The assignment prompt is to create a piece of art centered around the theme of heads, exploring their multifaceted meanings as cultural, sexual, and social identifiers. The emphasis is on the power of the artwork to express "pneuma," a concept involving the feeling of breath and internal pressure that creates tension between potentiality and physical manifestation. The head is seen as having a connection to nature, with its perceptive orifices facilitating a dialogue between human nature and the natural or elemental world.

This head piece embodies the profound interconnectedness between humanity and nature. Made from soil and decorated with vibrant green grass, the headpiece symbolizes a shared journey of growth. Just as a plant requires time to flourish, so too does the human mind need nurturing and experiences to mentally mature. Through this artwork, we are reminded of our inherent bond with the natural world and the parallel processes of growth and development that both nature and humans undergo over time.
