This (Unjust) American Life

Class of: 2023

Major: Communication Design BFA

Medium: Gouache painting

Faculty: Kate Teale

Prompt: The prompt for this project was to create a piece to be shown in either the MOMA or MOMA PS1. This final was open to interpretation, as long as it was able to be exhibited in either of the museums.

Taking three horror movies that dealt with various social justice issues, I painted the houses/buildings from each movie. In Midsommar’s case, sexism and gaslighting played a big role in the movie’s plot. Get Out tackled racism and the sense of white superiority in America, and The Amityville Horror, although subtle, deals with the flawed housing market in the U.S. and how the wealth gap affects average American households.
