It's not a chair, it's a "Seating Device"
Prompt: Create a "seating device" or chair out of wood
As stated by the title, this sculpture is a prototype for a seating device. Inspired by polyhedrons, I constructed the sculpture out of cherry hardwood and dowels. The shape of the piece creates an illusion of suspension through positive and negative space. While not called a “chair”, if this were to be built to scale, I would imagine it as a functional object that people could sit on. This is illustrated through a contextual photograph depicting the device in a real life setting. This project allowed me to explore geometry and functionality through sculpture along with learning new techniques for working with wood.
