Survival Gear for a Tropical Crisis

Class of: 2024

Major: Integrated Design BFA

Medium: Wearable sculpture: canvas, trash bag, cotton webbing, plastic, and fusible

Faculty: Carol Peligian

Prompt: We had to make a functional sculptural piece that responds to help a community at crisis.

My idea approaching this project was to create survival gears for people in situations where food and water are limited (in particular tropical countries where the heat is very high). My initial idea was to make a belt with pouches to hold food boxes/bags, water, and a reflective jacket; however, due to the pandemic, my resources and materials were limited. Instead of making a reflective jacket, I changed my direction and made a reversible hat. The belt with pouches was made using canvas, cotton webbing, and plastic buckles. The hat is made using canvas, a trash bag, and fusible. For the hat, my intention was to make it water-resistant/waterproof in case of the rain considering the community I had in mind lives in the tropics but it could be used by any community.
