Prompt: Bridge 4 gathers all my research and brings it together to inform my response to the potentials and challenges in the community I dealt with. Over the entire semester, I have learned skills and methods to explore and make sense of the environment around I and respond to it as designers in an informed, thoughtful way.
In this design project, I attempt to incorporate an item that is more functional in a social justice context into fashionable everyday wear. Breast Cancer is occurring more and more frequently even among young women now due to environmental factors like hormone disputing substances. After discussing the topic of mastectomy bras with my grandmother who has also survived from breast cancer and how impactful mastectomy bras are in the confidence of women who have undergone breast cancer procedures, I was inspired to incorporate it into a fashionable everyday wear garment in the future. It seemed fitting that I incorporated it with corsets, which are traditionally shape forming and are also currently trending with many designers recently adopting it into their collections. With this project, I hope to be able to make mastectomy bras fashionable in a futuristic and fashionable context.
