Bound. Broken. Born.
Prompt: For our final project in Drawing and Imaging, we were required to use three or more techniques we learned throughout the semester to create a piece.
Bound: The first panel shows what it feels like to be silenced. The hands over the mouth and the chains show restriction and control. The jail inside the eye symbolizes feeling trapped while still being aware of everything around you. Even though the person can see clearly, they cannot speak.
Broken: The second panel represents the moment when silence starts to crack. The face, as if it is breaking through glass, illustrates how much pressure builds up when emotions are held in for too long. The hand shadows suggest outside forces pushing in, while the tears depict pain and release.
Born: The third panel portrays the return of the voice. After being silent for so long, the emotions come out all at once. The distorted face and open mouth represent the intense and overwhelming feelings. The scream is not just sound, but an emotional release.
I utilized the three primary colors to increase emotion and movement across the triptych. Surrealism allowed me to transform the internal feelings into visible images. Silence can trap someone, pressure can break them, and voice can finally set them free.
