"YunJian"
Prompt: In the process of beginning the consideration of how objects inhabit space in the form of wearables. Collecting cardboards, we are assigned to construct an interesting form, thoughtful of the space it is taking and the negative space inherently created. In the choice of clothing we wear, it identifies us as individuals. With that in mind, this project allows us to create a design out of cardboard that can communicate something about us as individuals, whether it is society, family, or culture.
This is inspired by traditional Chinese clothing, Hanfu, which has a history spanning over 4,000 years. Origins go back to the Shang Dynasty. Using cardboard, I decided to create the collar part of the traditional Chinese garment accessory item in Hanfu, “YunJian”. In the process of making, I was able to make light cuts into the surface of the cardboard. This made it possible to create designs and patterns with the inner texture of the cardboard that it already had. In this project, the challenge was avoiding hot glue, tape, and glue. I came up with the idea of using a hole puncher and strings to make the connection. I was also able to create patterns with the string. For the back, I was drawn to wings, or specifically butterfly wings. Continuing with the requirement, I used strings and bass fasteners to make the cardboard come together. From this assignment, I learn many ways and even stronger ways to connect cardboards with different materials in place of using glue. Through this, I was able to further explore with cardboard and familiarize myself with recycled materials.
