Industry Kitchen Matchbox

Class of: 2022

Major: Communication Design BFA

Medium: Paper

Faculty: Aaron Brashear

Prompt: We each were assigned a restaurant to go to in NYC and turn the experience and atmosphere from the restaurant into either a matchbook or matchbox design. We had to include 6 different pictures that we took/found from the restaurant and include them in 4 different design ideas, which was later narrowed down to 1 finalized design.

My matchbox was based on a restaurant called Industry Kitchen. It is known for being right next to the east river and the old boats docked there. I created stamp like icons and a very industrial font to create my design. The colors were inspired by the cement and green tiles in the restaurant. I chose to make it larger than a normal matchbox because something big and bulky resembled the industrial areas in NYC and would definitely stand out on a table. This project really helped me understand the printing process and the different types of paper that lead to different printing results, which is really important for my future graphic design studies.
