my muse

Class of: 2023

Major: Fine Arts BFA

Medium: Sculpture: rockite cast, silver leaf

Faculty: Sam Bennett

Prompt: For this assignment, we were asked to first create a portrait of our favorite objects and then select one of these objects to recreate, to the best of our abilities, in the same likeness using similar materials if possible.

I chose to recreate my thermos lid, which doubles as a cup. I’ve grown quite fond of my thermos over the course of the semester, it has become a constant companion and my ticket into cafes ––a welcome change of scenery from the Making Center and a hot drink. It is by my side from the moment I leave in the morning to when I come home and rinse it out at night.

I looked into metal casting but this felt daunting and expensive so I opted for the wet lab and tried plaster. These casts were far too fragile so, following some advice, I bought white rockite and got my first successful cast! This is the cast I cleaned up and brushed with liquid silver leaf, photographed beside my actual thermos with the black plastic interior for reference.
