Assignment 1 "Partner/Gift" (Mail Art)
Prompt: The assignment was to construct a form of design that represented a special object of a partner, and translate that object into the face of a mail card. It required a lens of creativity that highlighted the object while simultaneously resulting in a well-structured card that is able to be mailed out to the partner.
With the assignment and my partners object at hand, I began by brainstorming the multiple routes I could enter with this project…beginning with what media I would use. With this being said, I decided to improve my pop-up skills and techniques by using that as the main element and feature in this mail card. In order to achieve a sense of emotion and connection to the card, I used elements that would bring attention to not only the object, but the components that come with describing that object. Taking the object; a pearled ring, I incorporated characteristics of pearls such as the beach, ocean and the tropics into the card. In terms of the materials that I would use, the best option for this project to succeed was Paper. However with saying this, I aimed to use a combination of papers that introduce diversity to the card, such as fabric paper, tissue paper and card stock paper.
