My Walks in the City

Class of: 2027

Major: Architectural Design BFA

Medium: Collage

Prompt: In Integrative Studio, our first project was a memoir project. This meant we had to write and create from our own perspectives. Within the task we had to capture our daily routine for a span of two weeks. During this period, we were tasked with closely observing both the external world around us, as well as our interior world of ideas, dreams, and memories.

For two weeks I took photos and sketches of things I would come across on a daily basis. I would find myself taking photos and sketches of buildings rather than people. I have a strong passion for architecture so I’m not surprised. It’s easier and faster for me to sketch a buildings compared to a person (it might not be in perspective…). I usually take pictures of building I find interesting anyway so that’s probably why I have more photos than sketches. For my final I wanted my collage to have depth. To achieve this I did a layering of sketches then photos, the sketches again then photos again. I also put the big skyscrapers in the back and my smaller sketches in the front. I decided to tape on the paper cut outs, at first the intent was to not make my decisions permanent but it actually made each layer stand out from the other. At first I was a little skeptical about what I started out with and how what I had was less and different from what my peers had, but I’m in love with my final. It came out better than I imagined. I really enjoyed the whole process of making this artwork. It’s a process that I can see myself doing again to see a different outcome.
